Rabbi Edgar Weinsberg

Rabbi Edgar Weinsberg“I believe very strongly in speaking one-on-one to people, no matter how large the audience. … How does speak one-on-one when there are a thousand people? The answer is you look at each one, one at a time. One at a time. You speak to one person at a time. And that does several things. One, it makes you more conversational. And you don’t end up speaking at, but rather with each person. And yet everybody’s receiving the communication.”

Rabbi Edgar Weinsberg, Ed.D., D.D., a.k.a. Rabbi Ed, is an ordained rabbi, gerontologist and healthcare educator. After his successful robotic surgery for prostate cancer at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in April 2007, he was moved to share his and others’ experiences by writing the book Conquer Prostate Cancer: How Medicine, Faith, Love, and Sex Can Renew Your Life. He wrote the book with his contributing author, Dr. Robert Carey, a urologist and a leading robotic surgeon.

His book received the 2009 Nautilus Silver Book Award for its innovative approach to health and healing. This competitive award recognizes new leading-edge books that underscore conscious living and positive social change, combining new ideas with religion or spirituality. The book also received two 2009 Indie Excellence Book Awards, as the winner of the men’s issues category and a finalist in the health category. In addition, it was a 2009 Next Generation Indie Book Award Finalist in the category of health. These awards designate the best new books published by independent publishers and authors.

Conquer Prostate Cancer has received favorable reviews nationally and regionally, in the Spring 2009 issue of Cure magazine and in the Tampa Journal of Medicine (December 2008), in addition to numerous endorsements and testimonials.

Rabbi Ed has voiced his views on prostate cancer and related concerns in the U.S. and abroad on three programs in Summer, 2008, on The Group Room Cancer Talk Show, a weekly XM satellite radio broadcast from Los Angeles. He also co-founded Hospice Care of Utica, New York, and throughout his career served as a part-time psychiatric center, nursing home, and police chaplain, as well as a consultant.

While serving a Boston area congregation for 21 years (1985-2006), Rabbi Ed appeared frequently on public access radio and television. He also published book reviews and newspaper and journal articles, addressing religious and interfaith concerns and topics like volunteerism and Holocaust education. He is now Rabbi Emeritus of his former synagogue, Congregation Shirat Hayam of the North Shore (Boston).
