Just so listeners can get a feel for your unique expertise, could you tell us a little about your journey to success in public speaking?
Sure Carma, I’d be happy to. Well it wasn’t quite the journey I had expected. I should start out by saying. I’ve always been very comfortable in one-on-one situations and one day several years ago I had a really, really bad experience where I literally froze in front of an audience of about 30 people.
CJ: I was terrified, as you can imagine, and determined to never let that happen again. So what I did was enroll in a program by an organization called CommuniSpot and what they did was put me through a 2-day of very intensive training with a half dozen others, people who are in your situation, and, essentially, went through a lot of role plays and video tapes of you so you could see and hear what you’re doing well and what you’re doing wrong. That worked out great and so I had two more freezes subsequent to that. I hadn’t realized that I needed some more frequent reinforcement, at which point, I had moved to New York, got involved in a Toastmasters Club which met 2 times a week. And that really is what sealed the deal of my public speaking improvement.
CS: So given your experience, do you believe that public speaking is a learned skill or something that you’re born with?
CJ: Carma that’s a great question, and I don’t wanna punt on this but I will to a certain degree: I really think it’s both. We all know people who are natural orators. They had the lead role in the school play, they were valedictorian at their high school, they just have a penchant for speaking and they’re fearless. Many are folks like me, who had the experience that I just mentioned a moment ago but who is now, through a lot of practice, sweat and hard work an effective speaker in front of groups up to 500.
