How to Organize Your Speech, Part 1

Last year, Carma Spence was invited to speak at the Western Museums Association’s 2012 Annual Meeting in Palm Springs, California, as part of a panel on public speaking. In this excerpt from her part of the presentation, she talks about organizing and opening your speech.

Carma suggests you start with the end goal of your presentation in mind and work backward. Once you know what you want your speech to accomplish … the action you want your audience to take after your presentation … you can create a body that leads your audience toward that goal. Then you can craft an opening that grabs their attention and pulls them into the body of your speech.

There are several ways to open a speech. In this presentation, Carma suggests three of them:

  • A thought-provoking question
  • A relevant quote or anecdotal story
  • A related generalization

    What I suggest you do as you watch TED talks is follow this same process.
    Make a note of what you like about the speech. If you find yourself completely entranced by the speech and not making notes, ask yourself what the speaker is doing to engage you so well. If on the other hand you find yourself drifting off or losing the plot, ask you self what the speaker could have done to keep your attention better.
